Veterinary education in the Philippines began as a response to the devastating rinderpest outbreak that severely impacted the country’s carabao industry. To address this, the University of the Philippines established the College of Veterinary Science, the first institution to offer formal veterinary training in the country. The college’s first academic building was founded in Pandacan, Manila, in 1909. Until the 1960s, it remained the sole source of locally trained veterinary professionals.
Today, there are more than 20 vet schools in the Philippines.
